2018 Audi Q5 vs BMW X3

The luxury SUV market offers pretty high standards already, so the 2018 Audi Q5 and the 2017 BMW X3 are well-matched. Both offer comfort, upscale materials and powerful engines and performance, but which one will come out on top? More importantly, which of these two vehicles is right for your needs?

For drivers in Greenville, New Bern and Raleigh, we put the 2018 Audi Q5 and the 2017 BMW X3 side-by-side for you to compare all the pros and cons of each. Read more about the key differences between the 2018 Audi Q5 and the 2017 BMW X3, and learn where you can test drive the winning vehicle.

The 2018 Audi Q5 added some elongation and sculpting to its exterior, as well as some fine detailing. HID and optional LED headlights flank the updated shield grille, and LED taillights sharpen the rear. However, most of the changes happened inside. The infotainment controls are designed for ease and convenience, and sporty seats, red stitching and carbon fiber trim add elegance and class. This is the most attractive interior in the segment.

Twin circular headlights with LED option, the BMW kidney grille and chiseled lines next to the hood were some updates for the BMW X3. The inside had few changes, other than color options, and nothing remarkable in terms of technology. The materials are quality enough, but the X3 isn't turning any heads with its bland interior styling.

The standard Audi Q5 comes equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine that produces 258 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, a considerable increase from the previous model. The lower curb weight makes this all the more apparent as well, with agile and responsive steering and quickness. The best part, however, is that none of this performance sound permeates the interior.

The X3 base has a rear-drive turbocharged inline-4 with 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque and an 8-speed automatic transmission that offers power, but it offers little in terms of handling. The base steering system isn't light or responsive, and has some difficulty unwinding comfortably. It's agile and athletic for its size, but it lacks the smoothness needed for driver confidence.

The interior of the 2018 Audi Q5 is luxurious and offers plenty of headroom, legroom and cargo space. Its new architecture added some space to the second row, allowing taller adults to sit comfortably. Third-row folding seats that are split in a 40/60 arrangement offer almost three cubic feet when folded.

The X3 makes efficient use of its space, with angled front seats for head and legroom, but it has less legroom than the Q5 for the rear passengers. Its cubic foot cargo area is among the top in its class at 27.6, but that still falls short of the Q5's 29.1 cubic feet.
